The Biennial of Young Artists of Europe and Mediterranean was born in 1984 by an idea of ARCI Kids, the office of ARCI focused on young people, with the aim to join young European and Mediterranean artists for a periodical meeting in the principal towns of Mare Nostrum.

Young people's creativity in these years has been considerate a marginal sector in the world and in the market of culture. In the same time, an "idem sentire" among the boys of Barcelona, Marseilles, Torino, Zagreb, Algeri has developed through common languages, ways and desires.

After “Tendencias” ( 1984 – Barcelona ), prologue of the manifestation, in 1985 the Catalan city host the first edition of the Biennial. During this first Biennial, the artists of six different countries (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Yugoslavia) met together with some guest of Balkanian and Arabian areas. In that meeting, The International Committee of Biennial has been joined by some Ministers and Mediterranean Cities and Associations.
The following editions took place in Salonicco in 1986, in Barcelona in 1987, in Bologna in 1988, in Marseilles in 1990, in Valencia in 1992, in Lisbon in 1994, in Turin in 1997 and in Rome in 1999.

Is important to remember that some events connected with the Biennial have been realised, such as Anteprima rock in Turin in 1990, Rotte Mediterranee in Algeri in 1990, Six Workshops in Sarajevo in 1998.
During these years, the Biennial has been considered the most important Mediterranean window on young creativity, featuring artists 18/30 years old, with cultural production divided in sectors: architecture, comics, cinema, video, graphic, industrial and communication design, photography, literature, gastronomy, music, theatre, dance, and so on.

The XI edition of the Biennial will take place in Athens 6/15 june 2003, organised by the Grecian Secretary for Youth into the Cultural Olympics that precede 2004 Athens' Olympic Games. In June 2003 (6-15 June), the city of Athens will host the 11th Biennial of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean countries, organized by General Secretariat for Youth of Greece: the Biennial has already been organized ten times, (Barcelona 1985, Thessaloniki 1986, Barcelona 1987, Bologna 1988, Marceille 1990, Valencia 1992, Lisbon 1994, Turin 1997, Rome 1999, Sarajevo 2001).
