They no longer remember where the name they bestowed upon themselves
comes from, nor why it has to do with gnomes, their trademark.
To start with, we're small...,jokes Sebastien, the sax player.
On their first record, 100% speed lutins, they posed in suits
on a boat on the Rhone river and after played it up by donning
pointed hats during their concerts. "We got rid of that
because we'd been tagged with a fantasy label", explains
Richard, the guitarist. "At the time, it was very trippy
with a lot of flutes, people liked to sit on the ground. Nowadays
they sit less... "

Not that they decided to dump the image or change styles to awaken
their audience, the Gus Weg Watergang is polymorphous and permeable
to all influences by nature. To make the point, Richard picks
up an invisible guitar and mimics a very energetic rock that can
just as easily follow a Latino or Eastern sound. No words or very
few.
"There's nothing we like better than a pretty melody played
on the saxophone, other than the instrument's universal aspect.
The text immediately pinpoints. After, you're obliged to write
poetry... we don't wish to be activists, it just isn't our thing
". The Gus Weg Watergang story, as it appears today,
has all the makings of a good rock saga, formed by a group of
friends, jack-of all trades musicians in an Avignon high school,
which continues today in professional recording studios. No leader,
and a highly approximate jazz-rock label: "and every time
we put a record out we notice the progress ". And a journey
through sound and sensations as common denominator.
