La Friche was born out of the ashes of the Seita tobacco factory and today it is a place of creativity and innovation. La Friche la Belle de Mai is both a work space for the 70 on site organisations (400 artists and creatives who work here every day and cultural dissemination and events (600 public art events per annum, from youth workshops to large-scale festivals).
With over 400 000 visitors a year, la Friche la Belle de Mai is a multi-faceted public space comprising a sports area, restaurant, 5 concert venues, shared gardens, a bookshop, a crèche, 2400 m2 of exhibition space, a 8000 m2 roof terrace, and a training centre (see all the venues here).
On this new cultural, urban site, we imagine, create and work to ensure that every idea can find an outlet. You can find every form of artistic expression here – every trend and people of all ages. Discovery, debate and the unexpected are on each corner of every street of this patch of town.

La Friche, due to its size and the large number of workspaces it can offer artists, allows them to blossom and for numerous projects to run simultaneously. Here sculptors, actors, painters, photographers, dancers and producers can take all the time they need to write and create.
All kinds of audiences, all sorts of artistic disciplines From babies at the crèche to parents at the exhibitions in the Panorama, from all the kids at shows in the Théâtre Massalia, to teenagers at the Playground, and young adults at contemporary music gigs at the Cabaret Aléatoire…La Friche has a credo: to attain high artistic standards and mix practices and audiences – which is demonstrated all year round in the rich, diverse programme.
An art and culture factory and space that's full of life
Here, we make, manufacture, disseminate and share art and culture. However, just as in any neighbourhood, you can walk down the street, wander around public spaces, eat and drink at the Grandes Tables, drop your child off at the crèche or take them to have fun at the playground, buy your fruit and veg at the farmer's market or tend your allotment in the shared family gardens.
The relationship between the Friche and the surrounding area
La Friche, which got its name from the Belle de Mai neighbourhood, affirms the close relationship it has with the surrounding area in formal and informal ways – through cultural initiatives with local schools and community centres in the Belle de Mai, by opening a playground and sports area, and by re-opening the Gyptis Cinema in the heart of the community.
A patch of the city: Urban experimentation
Cultivating an urban space is a delicate undertaking, in constant flux, and one of the priorities at la Friche has always been to establish a flexible, evolving framework. At the heart of this urban and architectural framework are ecological and sustainability concerns, questions of norms and processes, experiments and community spirit. This runs through the: participatory housing projects, shared gardens to make the urban environment greener and the landscaped square.
In 2007, la Friche established itself as a Co-operative Company with Collective Interests (SCIC) with variable capital.
This public/private status – SCIC – allows all interested parties – physical or moral, public or private, to contribute capital and have a say in the co-operative's objectives and projects.
The SCIC statutes provide the optimum response to facing new challenges in the region (decentralisation, cross-community issues) to really work towards meeting urban challenges, in terms of how it is run, but also how it develops.
The SCIC's board is made up of onsite users (artists and operators) and the public institutions that have supported the project over the last 20 years.
