Echo Système - catalogue of the exhibition on Gilles Barbier at la Friche

Gaël Charbau – Sébastien Gokalp

An overview of 25 years of creativity, exploring sculpture, drawings and installations by Gilles Barbier, his body of work is multi-faceted, ironic, fantastical, political  and pulls all the stops out in order to strip bare buried desire. The artist's work is unpredictable and unclassifiable.

1000 Crayons pour la liberté d'expression

Group book

The day after the attack in Paris at Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, la Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille), Graphic Art Festival (Paris), the French section of the International Graphic Alliiance, the French Designers' Alliance, the Brief Festival (Madrid), and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Regional Books Agency invited graphic artists and illustrators from all over the world to design an image representing the freedom of expression. In 10 days, they had produced around 1000 images from 43 countries in response to the call for images! These 1000 drawings were exhibited at la Friche la Belle de Mai from the 30 January – 22 March. This book designed by the poster designer and graphic artist Michel Bouvet, who selected most of the images which demonstrate the swell of emotion the events inspired and the fervent desire of artists to stand up for their rights through impertinence and humour. It is also an example of the impressive mobilisation generated in real time by new means of communication.

UNFRAMED Belle de Mai / Marseille

A book on the artist JR's project

JR owns the largest gallery in the world. In towns all over the world, he freely exhibits his photos, making the most of any available surface where he can stick his over-sized photos playing with relief and points of view.
At la Belle de Mai, JR explored the identity of the neighbourhood and invited residents to dip into their personal memories and photo albums. These photos, old or new, where re-framed, enlarged and mounted in situ to form a monumental work. Now these transfigured personal and diverse prints represent a snapshot of history and the collective memory of la Friche la Belle de Mai.

Étonnamment Etonnée

Text by Arno Bertina and photos by Frédéric Lecloux

The photographer Frédéric Lecloux and writer Arno Bertinaont were invited to put their personal stamp on la Friche la Belle de Mai. Welcomed as artists in residence at la Friche in 2013, here they give their unique impressions of a story that's always being re-written. It's a funny, poetic, political book about men and women's will to modestly reinvent the world around them and live in it together.

Les Grandes Carrioles de la Friche

Photographs by Pauline Daniel / illustrations by Martin Desbat / text by Julia Sammut

At la Friche, chefs and artists have pooled their imagination to create 8 food carts, eight barrows brimming with character that wind around the roads on site offering fairly priced street food. Cooked on the plancha, in a wok, steamed, fried, grilled, boiled or raw, the food carts offer a unique interpretation of street food using Mediterranean produce and flavours.

The book won the prize of best street food cook book at the French Gourmand Awards 2013.
