The Goethe-Institute's mission is to promote German language and culture overseas within the framework of international cultural co-operation.

The Goethe-Institut is the most important German cultural institution on the international stage. Its mission is to promote the German language abroad within the framework of international cultural co-operation.  In France, it organises and supports a wide range of cultural events representative of the huge diversity of German culture, and promotes intercultural exchange.
Due to the international dimension of Marseille European Capital of culture and the major role German culture played  at the heart of the cultural programme in 2013, the Goethe Institute decided to open an annexe in the city in mid October 2012. In 2014, the new liaison office moved into premises at La Friche la Belle de Mai.

Because of its history of immigration, the city of Marseille has rich cultural influences and is also a bridge between Europe and North Africa. It is the ideal location for promoting cultural exchange in the Mediterranean region.
Cultural links are at the heart of the activities of the Goethe-Institute in Marseille. In parallel, it offers linguistic, educational co-operation programmes and promotes the German language. They also support German teaching, and teachers, in schools and institutions in France.
