New arenas for the arts
alternative spaces / wastelands / factories
multidisciplinary projects
For several years, throughout the world, artists' collectives,
arts producers and managers, administrators, elected representatives
and intellectuals have been inventing new forms of relationships
between art and society.
In these creative laboratories, derelict factories and friches,
projects have been developing that radically change conventional
forms of production, public performance and dissemination of artistic
works.
In concrete terms, these experiments give priority to the participation
of local communities, interdisciplinary exchange and the permanent
presence of artists in a local area. They provide an alternative
means for living and conceiving the place of culture in the political,
economic, social, educational and urban environment.
The aim of this international seminar is to stimulate the exchange
and comparison of different experiences, which all affirm their
uniqueness in their own context. Throughout these three days of
first-hand accounts, analyses and discussions, we shall try to
identify the common factors within this diversity that bond these
experiments together and help them to develop
